GUIDELINES FOR OBTAINING DRIVERS PERMIT/DRIVERS LICENSE

1. Complete a DRIVERS EDUCATION ONLINE COURSE - you will receive

a PINK CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION FORM in the mail. (Examples:

cal-driver-ed.com, driveredtogo.com, driversed.com)

 

2. After you have received your certificate of completion and you are 15 1/2

AND 1 DAY old, you may take your PERMIT TEST at the DMV. We

recommend making an online appointment.

 

3. After you have passed the PERMIT TEST, you will make an appointment

for your FIRST LESSON with us before you begin driving with your

parent/guardian. We will not drive with you, but we will discuss important

information, your goals and hours and we will sign your permit at this time.

 

4. Begin driving with your PARENT/GUARDIAN:

• Your first 3-5 hours driving should be on paved back roads to

become familiar with all operations of the vehicle (lights, blinkers,

windshield wipers, defrost, etc...)

• Transition to roads with other vehicles and focus on safety and

awareness of other drivers while operating your vehicle.

• Complete 50 hours of driving (About 20-30 minutes/day for 4-5

months; if you would like to track your hours try the ROAD READY

APP; See recommendations on back regarding 50 hours of driving

content).

 

5. You may now sign up for BEHIND THE WHEEL DRIVERS TRAINING

Contact Mrs. Frigerio at (760) 937-3741 or Mrs. De la Mora at (760) 920-

1032. This is REQUIRED to take the DMV Driver’s License Exam, unless

you are 18 years old.

 

6. Fees are $250.00

 

MAIN DRIVING SITUATIONS TO PRACTICE:

50 hours is the minimum practice you need to be competent. You need to be

your family's primary driver for the next 5 months.

MASTER the FOLLOWING DRIVING SITUATIONS:

1. Backing up along a curb and out of a parking spot. (50 times minimum

practice)

2. Right hand turns on a RED light after complete stop (50 times minimum

practice).

3. Left hand-turn on a green light without an arrow-unprotected (50 times

minimum practice)

4. ALWAYS check your BLINDSPOT when turning and/or doing a lane

change. (50 times minimum practice).

a. Blinker first

b. Then look into to rear view mirror

c. Then look into the side mirror

d. THEN OVER YOUR SHOULDER in the direction you are moving

e. Finally: make the turn or lane change

5. Lane changes on Main Street in Bishop and highway (50 times minimum

practice)

6. Entering into middle lane on Main Street and turning. (50 times minimum

practice)

7. Always get into the bike lane before a right-hand turn-see #4 above (50

times minimum practice)

8. Do not go 1 mile over the speed limit EVER.

Failure to do any of these things with experience, ease and competence

may result in a failed driving test with DMV.
